Paarl is situated on the banks of the Berg River and is overlooked by a huge granite dome at the summit of the adjoining mountain, its name deriving from the majestic "pearl-like" granite dome  58 km from Cape Town on the National Road to the North. In this locality much of South Africa's best wine is produced. It is the headquarters of the KWV (established in 1918) whose cellars are said to be the largest in the world. Paarl is home to the longest main street in the Cape, along which many beautiful Cape Dutch and other historical homes dating back to the 18th century can be seen
