Introduction

Attractions

  • The Great Barrier Reef Wonderland houses three significant attractions - the Great Barrier Reef Aquarium (world's largest living coral reef aquarium), Omnimax Theatre, and Museum of Tropical Queensland.

  • Billabong Sanctuary is the north's most spectacular Australian wildlife park set on ten hectares of wetlands, rainforests and native eucalypt. 

  • Prolific birdlife and wildlife can also be experienced at the world-renown Town Common and Environmental Park, only 7km from city centre. 

  • National Parks surround the city and in fact encompass two thirds of Magnetic Island. The island is the most northerly point in Australia to feature large colonies of koalas in the wild.   • The city's heritage has been retained with much of the Central Business District and waterfront areas now housed in magnificently restored historic buildings, adding character and charm to the city heart. The city centre is framed by The Strand Waterfront and the looming pink granites of Castle hill.

  • The history of Townsville has been captured in the city's selection of museums. The Townsville Museum, Maritime Museum, RAAF and Military Museums offer insights into the development and growth of the region from settlement days through to its contemporary position as a strategic base within Northern Australia and the Asia Pacific. 

  • Heading west the rugged outback unfolds with the historic gold rush mining towns of Charters Towers and Ravenswood - time capsules of torn of the century architecture.

Activities

  • Beautiful Magnetic Island is just 20 minutes from the city centre by Fast cat ferry. Day cruises and diving expeditions to the Great Barrier Reef, and white water rafting excursions also depart regularly from the city. 

  • For those who enjoy active pursuits, why not take a guided bicycle tour or a walking tour of the many heritage sites within the city centre. If coach tours are more your style, consider incorporating a visit to Charters Towers in your itinerary.

  • The city is the sporting events centre of the North, and increasing numbers of visitors are being attracted to the region for the superb line up of national and international sporting events.
    Townsville has an extensive range of first-class sporting facilities and venues - everything from golf courses, tennis courts, public swimming pools, gymnasiums, cycling velodromes to surf life saving clubs horse riding schools, parachuting and sky diving.

  • The twin towns of Ayr and Home Hill. Bowen completes the southern boundary of this region which also features superb reefs, beaches and excellent fishing spots.
